TORA Ceremonial Matcha

100% USDA Certified Organic Stone Ground Japanese Green Tea Powder

The front of a bag of TORA Ceremonial Matcha.

Matcha (抹茶) is a finely ground green tea powder with a rich cultural history in Japan. Revered for its health benefits, matcha once served as the ritual drink of samurai warriors and Zen monks. Today, matcha remains the only tea prepared in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, or chadō (茶道)—"the way of tea." TORA Ceremonial Matcha represents some of the best organic matcha available on the market today. This exquisite tea is carefully handcrafted in small batches following centuries of tradition.

Early each spring, highly prized shade-grown tea leaves are harvested from the lush, misty slopes of the Kirishima mountain range. Once steamed and dried, the stems and veins are meticulously removed from each leaf to ensure optimal taste and quality. The remaining tencha (碾茶) is then slowly stone-milled to produce an exceptionally fine and verdant matcha. One sip of this tea is sure to deliver a deliciously sweet and smooth flavor that you won't forget. Try TORA Ceremonial Matcha today and experience the real taste of quality!

All Matcha Products Are Not Created Equal!!!

These days the market appears to be completely saturated with matcha products. It seems like matcha is in almost everything now: lattes, energy drinks, smoothies, creams, soaps, pills—you name it! In fact, a quick Google search for "matcha" will return seemingly endless results. There are simply so many different products available that it can be difficult for the consumer to even know where to begin! Unfortunately, much of the matcha for sale today is cheap, low-grade junk.

The best matcha traditionally comes from Japan where the cultivation and production of this tea has been slowly perfected over many centuries. Historically, matcha can trace its roots to ancient China but it's important to note that the country has not produced anything of quality for over 800 years. Recently however, the increasing popularity of matcha worldwide has allowed China, Korea and other tea producing countries to enter the market in an effort to meet the growing demand. Despite the ability to churn out vast quantities of the tea, none of these countries have the long tradition of expertise required to produce quality matcha.

While the price of these products may be alluring, don't be fooled—they taste terrible! Indeed, it's no surprise that many people who try matcha for the first time are either unimpressed or put off by the tea altogether. It doesn't have to be this way! Do yourself a favor and purchase real, organic, ceremonial grade matcha from Japan—you will be happy you did!

Why TORA Ceremonial Matcha?

The matcha used to produce TORA Ceremonial Matcha meets exceedingly strict quality standards. No corners are cut in the production of this tea. It is simply some of the highest grade organic matcha available on the market today. Imported directly from Japan, you can be sure you are purchasing real ceremonial grade matcha!

At Tora Tea Co., we believe that matcha should never be adulterated by harsh agricultural chemicals and pesticides. TORA Ceremonial Matcha is 100% certified organic by HOAS (Hyogo Prefectural Organic Agriculture Society), one of the premier organic certification bodies in Japan. Therefore, our matcha meets all of the strict quality standards for organic products established by Japanese law. If that is not enough, TORA Ceremonial Matcha is also 100% USDA certified organic as well!

High-quality matcha is extremely difficult to produce without the aid of conventional fertilizers and pesticides. The tea plants are far more susceptible to disease, insects and environmental conditions. Consequently, the overall quality of organic matcha can vary tremendously based upon a number of different factors. TORA Ceremonial Matcha is the result of tirelessly sampling the many different grades of organic matcha available on the market. We truly believe that we have found one of the best organic matchas Japan has to offer.

The tea leaves used to produce TORA Ceremonial Matcha are grown on the lush, fertile slopes of the Kirishima mountains deep in the heart of southern Japan. Here, the climate is ideal for tea cultivation: warm, stable temperatures, high humidity and rich volcanic soil create some of the best growing conditions in all of Japan. Many tea farmers harvest their crop several times each season; however, the very best matcha is produced from leaves of the first flush, or harvest of the year. In Japanese, these leaves are known as ichibancha (一番茶), or "first-picked tea." Only the finest ceremonial grade matcha is produced from ichibancha, and TORA Ceremonial Matcha is no exception!

Roughly, one month before the first flush, the tea fields are shaded by a canopy of black netting known as a tana (棚). The tana gradually limits the amount of sunlight the tea bushes receive as the spring growing season draws to a close. The highest quality tea leaves are grown in near darkness by the time harvest arrives. These leaves are smaller, softer and thinner than ordinary tea leaves but contain many more amino acids. The high amino acid content of these young leaves are what gives TORA Ceremonial Matcha its characteristic sweet and smooth flavor. Shading the tea also dramatically increases the production of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the strikingly beautiful, emerald color of this tea.

After harvest, the leaves are then lightly steamed and dried to prevent oxidation. The steaming process helps to preserve the tea's rich color and halt the breakdown of amino acids. Next, the stems and veins are meticulously removed from each leaf to ensure optimal taste and quality. Ground stems and leaf veins will significantly alter the flavor of matcha. Tea with the stems and veins removed is known as tencha. Real, high-grade matcha is produced only from the finest ground tencha leaves. Tencha is generally stored and refrigerated until it is ready to be ground into matcha...

The milling process requires great care, patience, and most importantly—time. Traditionally, high-quality matcha is slowly stone-ground between large granite disks for many hours on end. Just 30 grams of matcha can take over an hour to produce! Matcha should never be ground too quickly: the excessive heat generated from the friction of the disks can easily ruin the flavor. Once the tea has been milled, it is sealed and refrigerated until it is ready for shipment.

The tremendous amount of labor that goes into producing just one gram of quality organic matcha can easily explain the high cost of this type of tea.

But how much does matcha really cost when compared to other beverages on the market?

TORA Ceremonial Matcha is actually quite a bargain at around $1 per cup (2 gram serving). Consider that many people spend $4-5 dollars every time they buy a premium coffee or latte from Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc. TORA Ceremonial Matcha is a much cheaper and healthier alternative to these expensive, sugar-loaded and artificially flavored beverages.

Start your day the right way with TORA Ceremonial Matcha and experience the real taste of premium organic Japanese green tea!

Health Benefits

Drinking matcha tea regularly offers a great many benefits. Matcha is an excellent source of healthy energy and contains less than half the amount of caffeine found in coffee. One serving of TORA Ceremonial Matcha (2 g) contains approximately 50 mg of caffeine. Compare that with a standard cup of coffee (8 fl oz) which can contain over 150-200 mg of caffeine depending on the variety, roast, brew time etc.

Excessive caffeine intake can tax the nervous system and adrenals causing restlessness, mood swings and increased stress/anxiety. When you drink matcha you are far less likely to experience the negative side effects caffeine. Matcha naturally contains high amounts of the amino acid L-theanine, which acts as a natural anxiolytic by boosting the production of alpha waves in the brain. Alpha waves help to promote relaxation and improve mental focus and clarity. Matcha is one of the few drinks on earth that has the ability to both energize and soothe simultaneously. This synergy is one of the many reasons matcha remains so highly esteemed in Japanese culture.

TORA Ceremonial Matcha also contains many vitamins (A, C, E & K), trace minerals and antioxidants. These compounds help to boost immune system function, promote heart health and may even prevent disease. Unlike many teas, when you drink matcha, you are actually ingesting powdered tea leaves. Ingesting the leaves of a tea offers many more nutrients than simply drinking an infusion. In fact, matcha contains over 10 times the amount of healthy antioxidants found in a traditional cup of green tea.

Many of these antioxidants like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) help to neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals within the body. Free radicals damage healthy cells and accelerate the onset of disease and premature aging. Matcha contains far more EGCG than any other type of tea including black, oolong, green and white. Studies have shown that EGCG may promote cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. EGCG may also inhibit the growth of cancer cells and act as a neuroprotective agent against degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Research even suggests EGCG may aid in the fight against viruses and various bacterial/fungal infections like Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.

Chlorophyll is a healthy and powerful pigment found in matcha. Responsible for the rich green color of the tea, chlorophyll also acts as a natural detoxifier. Chlorophyll helps to cleanse the blood and liver of toxins and maintain an alkaline environment within the tissues of the body. An acidic pH in the body is unhealthy and known to increase susceptibility to disease and infection. Chlorophyll along with caffeine, acts as an effective appetite suppressant, making matcha the perfect drink to help curb those pesky junk food cravings. There is even evidence that chlorophyll can help to control bodily odors and speed the healing of wounds! Who knew the color green could be so healthy?
